My major is in Agribusiness Management with a minor in Food Science – Beverage Technology. 2. My knowledge of alcohol stems from working at a wine store in Rochester, MI where the focus was buying by taste. Like, down to the dollar does X wine taste better than Y wine. 3 years of that was more intense than my degree!
I have 10 years of experience with wine, 8 years of experience with liquor, 7 years of experience with beer, and probably too much experience with food.
I believe any beverage is to be experienced, not tasted. Because of that, I try to learn about customers and their circumstances around buying something. Like, if someone wants a bottle of wine is it for those Saturday afternoons where they’ve just gotten done with some shopping and they have something to do that night but their afternoon is free? Is this Sunday dinner with ma & pa? Is it Tuesday night and you just got home from work and Jim over in accounting asked you the same question 7 times and why won’t he just RETIRE?!!?!??!? There are different bottles of wine for each of those scenarios. The other important thing I focus on is getting under budget. There’s always something that is equally satisfying at the price customers WERE willing to pay and something so much more satisfying about leaving with more than you expected to leave with.
My mood and desires change with the wind. Those desires do tend to revolve around red wine, coffee, and kombucha, though.
Extra virgin olive oil. Having learned that olive oil isn’t just for sautéing vegetables but that it’s also a condiment AND relatively healthy? Yes please!!!
My first vacation with my wife in Traverse City at an event called “Blossom Day”. It wasn’t any particular winery we visited that was wonderful, it was the entire experience. We finished up at a local brewery that had an appetizer called “Crab tots with lemon aioli”. It was a spiritual experience eating those after a long day.
